The North Hobart Picture Palace opened in 1914. The proprietors of the venue were Alf Channell and Edward Morris. In 1921 the building was purchased by leo Williams who converted it intp a billard saloon, gymnasium and boxing arena.

In 1935 J.J. Wignall opened a new cinema in the building named The Libery Theatre. In 1948 the thetare was sold. The new owners noted as Gordon Gourlay and Ross Holyman. Later in 1948 the cinema opened as the State Theatre. In 1974 the Film Radio & television Board purchased the cinema and the responsibility of running the cinema was given to the Australian Film Institute
