Opened as an independently operated cinema. Taken over by Hoyts in 1926.

Film Weekly records the following changes in capacity:
1946/47-1948/49 = 1213
1949/50-1961/62 = 1403

Reference to new apartments built on the original site of the Barkly Theatre:
"The site has maintained its original look, with a four-storey cinema-style building that includes 30 apartments-built using some of the site's original materials in compliance with Heritage Victoria." (D'Alfonso, 2010)
